Speaking today on Good Morning Britain, Gina said:  She's fine, she’s recovering.”

Gina was waiting in the car when her sister got the shocking diagnosis.

She explained to Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid: “I was in the car, I drove her to see the consultant and she was longer than expected.

“Within a week she was diagnosed. It was very fast.”

Discussing her sister’s decision to share her story, she said: “It was her choice, we are very strong willed, she just does what she wants to do.

“She thought it would be helpful for other women to learn about her journey.”

Julia, who co-presented the BBC One programme Countryfile from 2004 to 2014, found a lump in her breast last year, which proved to be a cluster of benign micro-cysts.

The mother-of-three revealed has had her left breast removed, along with the six centimetre tumour.

Speaking after her surgery, the brave star said:  "I feel relief that the operation is over. The anxiety leading up to it was overwhelming.

"I feel sad that such a brutal treatment is necessary in so many breast cancer cases, but I choose life.

"I will do anything I can to live to see my children grow up and if this was happening to any other member of my family, or them, I would swap places in a heartbeat.

"I will follow Walt Whitman's advice: 'Keep your face always toward the sun and the shadows will fall behind you'.

"To all you warrior women (and men) out there, I send my love.

"I'll hold a little of my strength to get through the next few weeks and months. Namaste. The sacred in me recognises the sacred in you."
