Where was Screw filmed?

Peterhead Prison

Screw is set in the fictional men’s jail, Long Marsh prison.

However, the show was filmed at Peterhead Prison on the east coast of Aberdeenshire that was historically referred to as ‘Scotland’s gulag’.

The former jail operated from 1888 to 2013 and could hold around 400 prisoners – it was also a specialist centre for sex offenders.

Since the prison closed it has operated as a museum.

Peterhead Prison was also used at the filming location for the 2018 British zombie film Redcon-1.

The Screw cast visited the prison ahead of filming and lead actress Nina Sosanya told Channel 4: “We were allowed to have a look inside and it was a shock seeing the small sizes of the cells, the narrow doors and the low ceilings.”

Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall

A lot of the interior scenes for Screw were filmed in a studio that was created to replicate a prison wing.

The set was designed in Glasgow’s famous Kelvin Hall.

The historic location is an early 20th century exhibition hall that has been utilised for several cultural purposes.

Glasgow City Council gave planning permission to create an £11.9m television and film studio to promote creativity.

What is Screw about?

Screw follows a team of wardens working on C Wing at Long Marsh Prison, headed up by senior prison officer Leigh Henry.

In season two, the prison officers are keen to make a fresh start, with trainee warden Rose Gill determined to put her past mistakes behind.

The second series also sees the officers and inmates suspicious that there is an undercover police officer in the prison.
