Lewis signed a deal and began filming his follow-up role, just a few months after leaving Billions.
In the BritBox/Spectrum Originals short series A Spy Among Friends, the actor will feature alongside Guy Pearce.
The six-episode series, which had been in development for more than a year before finalizing negotiations, began filming in London in October and will also shoot in Romania.
News of Lewis appearing on A Spy Among Friends arrived days after Lewis shocked Billions fans by announcing that he would not be returning for the show's previously confirmed sixth season.
His contract was limited to five seasons, and he thought his character's journey had come to an end.
Following the death of his wife, actress Helen McCrory, this spring, Lewis will stay close to home in London with his two teenage children.
Spy takes place in London, whereas Billions takes place in New York.
What is A Spy Among Friends about?
The series was created by Alexander Cary and is based on Ben Macintyre's New York Times best-selling novel.
A Spy Among Friends revolves around the defection of a British intelligence officer and KGB double agent – played by Pearce – and his relationship with an MI6 friend and colleague, played by Lewis.
Lewis previously worked with Cary in Showtime’s Homeland.
According to the , A Spy Among Friends is set to debut next year on BritBox in the UK and Spectrum's On Demand platform in the US, depending on production timelines.
Who is Damian Lewis?
Born February 11, 1971, Lewis is an English actor, presenter, and producer.
He is most recognized for his role as US Army Major Richard Winters in HBO's Band of Brothers, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.
He also won a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for his role as US Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody in Homeland.
He received his third Primetime Emmy nomination and fourth Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Henry VIII of England in Wolf Hall.
In the first five seasons of Showtime's Billions, he played Bobby Axelrod, and he played actor Steve McQueen in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019.
