MARTIN Freeman fans are LOVING his new big crime show, The Responder.

The series follows an unconventional urgent response officer tackling a series of night shifts on the beat in Liverpool.

How many episodes of The Responder are there?

The Responder is based on true events as it is about the life of ex-police officer Tony Schumacher, who is also the writer for the series.

There are five episodes in the series which stars Martin Freeman as copper Chris Carson.

Speaking about the show, Martin told the : "When Laurence Bowen first sent me the scripts he was very excited and after reading the first few pages, and I felt this was really something else.

"It wasn’t a drama that was written by committee, it was unfiltered Tony Schumacher, and I really liked that he put whatever he wanted on the page.

What has happened in episodes one and two?

The series follows Chris Carson, played by Freeman, in a series of night shifts in central Liverpool.

In the first two episodes we see that Carson is a man on the edge and the on-duty scenes are interspersed with scenes of him at therapy, at home and with his mother in a nursing home.

He is partnered with Rachel Hargreaves, a new, inexperienced and still idealistic officer, who wants to play by the rules.

We also met Carl Sweeney, a mid-ranking drug dealer whose stash of cocaine has been stolen by drug addict Casey.

Carson is trying to help Casey and in doing so crosses Sweeney, leading Sweeney to attempt to intimidate him.

When is The Responder on TV?

The Responder was first announced back in February 2020, but filming was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic..

The series continues tonight, Monday January 31, 2022, at 9pm, on BBC One.

The next episode will continue the following day (February 1, 2022) at the same time.
