Early on into the interview, the You’re Beautiful chart-topper appeared to be in good spirits on the show, however, things soon took a turn for the worse.

After a compilation of James’ hits played on the show, host Charlie rudely asked: "Looking at that video and looking at you now. What’s going on?"

James, slightly taken aback by his comment, joked: "I think with plastic surgery it’s little and often is the technique I would advise."

Charlie laughed, before adding: "As you know, some people will think that’s a double bluff."

Baffled by his reply, James cringed: "It’s not… I don’t know where to go from here."

Closing the awkward moment, Charlie said he’d "put a stop to it right there", as Naga burst out into a fit of unnecessary laughter.

Many viewers have since slammed the "embarrassing" interview afterwards, saying the conversation as a whole was littered with "insane" questions.

Taking to Twitter, one person penned: “What a dreadful interview by Charlie and Naga, we had to turn it off as it was so appalling, even James Blunt thought so.”

Another said: “Very possibly the worst interview I’ve ever heard. Well done James for putting up with their inane questioning with such good grace.”

A third wrote: “That was a really surreal interview with James Blunt on BBC Breakfast - they didn't know what to say to him, he didn't know how to respond. Weird.”

As the interview ended, James told the hosts he was getting an Uber home, but even that became a strange back and forth as they reminded him he could get a car.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
