THE classic Michael Caine spy thriller, The Ipcress File, has returned to ITV.

Starring Peaky Blinders' Joe Cole, the new series is based on the spy novel by Len Deighton.

Where is The Ipcress File set?

The Ipcress File is set in Berlin and London in the 1960s and centres around British army sergeant Harry Palmer.

Harry (Joe Cole) finds himself in Berlin shortly after the border between East and West Germany was closed and The Berlin Wall was built.

He starts working as a fixer and smuggler, but the law catches up with him and he is sentenced to eight years in English military jail.

However, a man from British Intelligence offers him a proposal to avoid prison.

The proposal is that Harry will become a spy, and his first case will be The Ipcress File, a dangerous undercover mission that will take him across the world.

Where was The Ipcress File filmed?

Cheshire and Liverpool

Filming began in early 2021 with film crews spotted around the city centre.

They took up an area around Hope Street and Falkner Street, which had been transformed to look like London in the 60s with vintage cars and people dressed in the fashions of the time.

The production team were also sighted in Rodney Street, and filming locations have also included the outside of Liverpool Lime Street station, St George's Hall, Castle Street, and the Philharmonic Pub.

TV crews were also spotted shooting scenes for the remake of the iconc novel in Cheshire village, Burton.

Scenes were also shot in the Nantwich area of Cheshire.

Croatia

Despite part of the series being set in Berlin, the production team chose to shoot in Croatia instead.

Filming began in April 2022 and lasted until June 2022.

When is The Ipcress File released on ITV?

The first episode of the series aired at 9pm on Sunday, March 6, 2022, on ITV.

The six episodes will then air on consecutive Sunday nights.
