CHANNEL 4 viewers were in tears watching 24 Hours in A&E as one couple faced losing each other after 60 years of marriage.
In a special episode celebrating the hospital reality series' "memorable moments", viewers saw Carole rushed to the emergency room after suffering a suspected stroke.
The 79-year-old is seen looking confused and unable to speak properly while neurologist Mahinda Yogarajah assesses her.
Her son, Simon, has arrived in the hospital with Carole as husband Ted rushes behind them in his car.
Ted had called Simon to say something had happened to Carole, with him telling the camera "she just changed."
The doctor gets Carole over for a CT scan and confirms everyone's worst fears that she has indeed had a stroke.
Dr Mahinda then chats to Simon about giving Carole a ‘clot-busting’ but it only has a one-in-eight chance of working and carries significant risk.
Ted eventually arrives to the hospital and grips his wife's hand, but becomes so distraught Simon and Dr Mahinda have to console him.
He explains that he met Carole when he was just 14 and she pushed him off a fence after he insulted her about her weight.
Ted quickly won her over with a ride on his pushbike, but then explained why he had got so upset at the hospital.
"After we first met she got taken to hospital with a problem with her kidney... I told her 'I can't lose you', and decided after that I have to marry her," he told the camera.
In one heartbreaking moment at the hospital, Carole tries to ask her husband and son for something from her bag.
They eventually handed her a notebook and pen on which she wrote, 'I love you'.
She then gestured to them to tell Ted to look after Simon.
"Don't worry, we will be alright," Ted tells her as Simon says, "I will look after him."
Carole was eventually sent to the stroke specialist ward and left hospital 10 days later.

The episode ended with an update that Ted died with a tribute to the man shown with a photo of the couple kissing.
