Grand Designs: The Street couple blasted for forking out £650k on ‘horrendous and soul-destroying’ home

THE Grand Designs: The Street couple spent a whopping £25,000 on a lighting system for their £625,000 home and £8,000 on a new TV.

Viewers of the Channel 4 show were in disbelief with the guest's extravagant spend.

Married couple Vineet and Simmi from Oxford were eager to build their own home with a budget of £625,000.

Due to the house's poor structure, fortress walls, a steel roof and insulated concrete forework needed to be put in place.

They were motivated to build their own home after finding they wanted more space, with Simmi explaining: "At the previous house and the rental space, our children were sharing a room.

"And my husband will let you know, I have a huge shoe collection and other stuff."

Vineet wanted to add a new lighting system controlled by an iPad at the cost of £25,000.

This required an electrician to rewire the whole house.

But viewers were shocked at the couple for spending their money of lavish appliances on a home they described as "grim" and "lifeless."

One viewer said: "£25k just to have a system that allows control of the lights in any room. Get up and use the light switch you lazy git!"

Another wrote: "No signs of life at all. No movement, no visitors, no surprises, no life. Utterly soul destroyingly grim."

A third penned: "Why would you want an 82 inch TV?"

The couple faced challenges with the rendering on the outside of the property, after the warranty provider, who certifies the building for insurance purposes, refused to allow it.

This delay cost them over £8,000 for extra rental costs and an extension to the self build mortgage.

After months of hard work, the couple were pleased with the end result.

The property had beautifully designed interiors and boasted a huge spacious party room at the back of the house.

Host Kevin McCloud labelled the house "eccentric, vibrant and larger than life. It reflects their spirits and contradictions."
