A CONTESTANT on The Great British Sewing Bee suffered a nightmare blunder just minutes into the latest challenge.

The BBC One sewing competition returned this week with 12 new contestants hoping to be crowing the ultimate sewer.

Just minutes into the first episode and the starting challenge, one of the new contestants suffered a horrific "sabotage".

Historical garment-maker Mitch had host Sara Pascoe with her head in her hands as his sewing machine broke during the challenge.

He had been tasked with making a mini skirt out of wool as part of a pattern test, with two symmetrical pockets.

Judge Esme Young announced: "Patrick and I want you to make the mini skirt, it has two patch pockets with piping around the edge."

Fellow judge Patrick Grant added: "As a homage to our fabulous new home, we want wool from Yorkshire."

The contestants were given just two hours and 45 minutes to complete the task and hang the skirt up.

Theatre manager Mitch was met with difficulties when his sewing machine stopped working towards the end of the challenge.

"Don't jam up!" he could be heard saying to the machine. "I have just jammed a pin in the machine, I've been sabotaged by my machine."

Trying to calm him down, Sara said: "Mitch, don't pull it apart now," and he continued to pull and tug to fix the machine.

"My thread has split and jammed in the machine," he replied. "I have been sabotaged by my machine, I have been sabotaged by my thread! It's clearly not me..."

The other contestants were seen putting their skirts on the mannequins as Mitch continued to struggle with his machine.

"I'm behind, I need to try and calm down a bit," he said to himself as he tried to stay calm and fix the mess.

"Oh no, my thread has come off, it really isn't something you want to happen this close to the end, come on!"

As Sara called the last few minutes, Mitch was seen still at his sewing machine trying to get his skirt together.

"I worry when I see a naked mannequin!" Sara exclaimed, as Mitch tried to get the garment onto the mannequin.

When the judges got a chance to take a look at it, they were left unimpressed at the "uneven pockets" and "nightmare" finish.

Pointing at the hem, Patrick asked: "What's going on there? You've had a right old nightmare with that, haven't you!"

"It's quite a mess, and I have broken the machine, but I have made a skirt!" Mitch joked - before he was eliminated from the show.
