British Soap Awards 2022 winners list in full

THE British Soap Awards returned in 2022 to celebrate a mammoth year in soap operas after being off air for two years.

The star-studded event took place on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the glamorous Hackney Empire in London, with actors from Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, EastEnders and Doctors in attendance.

There were 14 categories in this years' British Soap Awards with some voted for by the public, and some by a panel of expert judges.

BEST BRITISH SOAP

Emmerdale took home the award for Best British Soap, bagging the prestigious gong following a year of hard-hitting storylines.

BEST LEADING PERFORMER

Emmerdale won big again, with Paige Sandhu, who plays murderous serial killing villain Meena Jutla, taking home the sought after award.

Sandhu beat off competition from Sally Carman who plays Abi Webster in Coronation Street, Gillian Wright who plays Jean Slater in EastEnders, Linda Henry who plays Shirley Carter in EastEnders and Mark Charnock who plays Marlon Dingle in Emmerdale.

BEST FAMILY

Emmerdale scooped another prestigious prize this year, with iconic family The Dingles winning best soap land family.

The Dingles, beat off competition from The Alahans in Coronation Street, The Carters in EastEnders and The McQueens in Hollyoaks.

VILLAIN OF THE YEAR

Maximus Evans, who plays Corey Brent in Coronation Street, took home the Villain of the Year Award following his performance in the hate crime storyline based on the murder of Sophie Lancaster.

The other nominations in the Villain of the Year category were Laura White who plays Dr Princess Buchanan in Doctors, Toby-Alexander Smith who plays Gray Atkins in EastEnders, Paige Sandhu who plays Meena Jutla in Emmerdale and Rhiannon Clements who plays Summer Ranger in Hollyoaks.

BEST COMEDY PERFORMER

Tameka Empson scooped the Best Comedy Performer award for her portrayal of Kim Fox in EastEnders in the coincidentally all-female category of nominees.

She accepted the award in a glitzy long sleeved dress having beaten Jane Hazelgrove who plays Bernie Winter in Coronation Street, Sarah Moyle who plays Valerie Pitman in Doctors, Lisa Riley who plays Mandy Dingle in Emmerdale and Chelsee Healey who plays Goldie McQueen in Hollyoaks.

BEST NEWCOMER

The Best Newcomer award went to Ross Boatman who plays the role of Harvey Monroe in EastEnders.

Boatman beat Paddy Bever who plays Corrie's Max Turner, Ross McLaren who plays Doctor's Luca McIntyre, Darcy Grey who plays Emmerdale's Marcus Dean and Matthew James-Bailey who plays Hollyoaks' Ethan Williams.

BEST STORYLINE

Hollyoaks won the award for Best Storyline for the episode portraying Misbah’s Historic Rape featuring Harvey Virdi as Misbah Maalik.

  • Coronation Street - Hate Crime
    Harry Visioni (Seb Franklin) Mollie Gallagher (Nina Lucas) Sally Carman (Abi Webster) David Neilson (Roy Cropper) Millie Gibson (Kelly Neelan) Maximus Evans (Corey Brent).
  • Doctors - Bear and his mother encounter racism at St Phil’s Hospital
    Dex Lee (Bear Sylvester) Angela Wynter (Makeda Sylvester) Laura Bayston (Nurse Cathy Jenkins)

BEST SINGLE EPISODE

Doctors won the Best Single Episode award for Three Consultations and a Funeral. The GP surgery based drama beat Coronation Street - Flashback, EastEnders - Jean in Southend, Emmerdale - Marlon’s stroke and Hollyoaks' – Out of Time.

BEST DRAMATIC PERFORMANCE

Mark Charnock won Best Dramatic Performance for his portrayal of Marlon Dingle's stroke in Emmerdale, a character he has played in Yorkshire-based soap since 1996.

Other nominations in the catergory were:

  • Dex Lee (Bear Sylvester) – Doctors
  • Gillian Wright (Jean Slater) – EastEnders
  • Harvey Virdi (Misbah Maalik) - Hollyoaks

BEST ON-SCREEN PARTNERSHIP

Lacey Turner & Gillian Wright, who play mother and daughter Stacey Slater and Jean Slater in EastEnders, won the Best On-Screen Partnership award.

The EastEnders beat off competition from the following soap double acts:

  • David Neilson & Mollie Gallagher (Roy Cropper & Nina Lucas) – Coronation Street
  • Chris Walker & Jan Pearson (Rob Hollins & Karen Hollins) – Doctors
  • Isobel Steele & Bradley Johnson (Liv Flaherty & Vinny Dingle) – Emmerdale
  • Anna Passey & Kieron Richardson (Sienna Blake & Ste Hay) - Hollyoaks

BEST YOUNG PERFORMER

Millie Gibson won Best Young Performer for her portrayal of Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street.

Runners up in the young category included Sonny Kendall who plays Tommy Moon in EastEnders, Amelia Flanagan who plays April Windsor in Emmerdale, and Jayden Fox who plays Bobby Costello in Hollyoaks.

SCENE OF THE YEAR

Hollyoaks won Scene of the year for the episode Misbah Didn’t Consent with Haiesha Mistry (Yasmine Maalik) and Harvey Virdi (Misbah Maalik.)
