Why is The Late Show with Stephen Colbert canceled?

As reported, The Late Show will not air the week of Monday, November 27, 2023, as Stephen Colbert revealed that he is recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix.

While there was no show scheduled for Monday, episodes were set to air on Tuesday, November 28, Wednesday, November 29, and Thursday, November 30.

According to the outlet, a host of big-name stars were supposed to appear during the week, including:

  • Barbra Streisand
  • Jennifer Garner
  • Baz Luhrmann
  • Patrick Stewart
  • Jon Batiste
  • Kelsey Grammer

On November 27, the Instagram account "a message from Stephen" that said: "Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week. I’m sure you’re thinking, 'Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?'

"Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas."

This is not the first time the popular TV show has taken a hiatus due to health concerns regarding Colbert.

On October 17, 2023, The Late Show failed to air due to a different diagnosis.

Earlier that week, the popular comedian began hosting his show from home after revealing he had contracted Covid-19.

On October 18, Colbert revealed via , formerly known as Twitter, that his doctors told him to take time off to fully recover.

During his time off, the Emmy-winning television host said: "A heady blend of Paxlovid and onions in my socks (thank you, Fallon) will be rebuilding my immune system."

As per his X post, Stephen wrote: "Sorry to say, per doctor's orders, I'm going to be out for the rest of the week.

In April 2022, Stephen contracted Covid-19 and was forced to take his show off-air in order to fully recover.
