Tom, whose long-awaited film Top Gun: Maverick is hitting cinemas at the end of this month, was slammed by viewers for 'plugging' his forthcoming feature during his interview.

Megastar Tom, 59, was one of the first guests to sit down with Phil and Julie, telling them about his love for the UK and particularly The Queen.

But Tom couldn't resist promoting his new movie and was soon speaking of his upcoming film in detail.

"Every film I make is important, but this one, people have been asking for decades," the Hollywood star explained.

"For decades I’ve been thinking 'what could I do?'"

However, viewers were not impressed that Tom was using the moment to promote the sequel to the 1986 original.

One wrote: "So you think if #TomCruise didn't have a big film release, would he have appeared here for #platinumjubilee??"

Another posted: "Thought it was the Queen's Jubilee not an opportunity for Tom Cruise to promote himself."

A third echoed: "Why has Tom Cruise just promoted his new film?"

"Why is Tom Cruise promoting his new film? It seems to be just clips of random celebs, I'm very confused," another chimed in.

Someone else agreed: "I thought this was all about Her Majesty. Come on who cares about Tom Cruise. Publicity for himself and his films."

Tom said he was honoured to be part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, in which he introduced the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery.

He said: "(The Queen) is a woman that I greatly admire, what she has accomplished has been historic. She has met presidents, world leaders, people from all walks of life.

"I just remember always as a kid seeing photos of her. I came to England, started making movies here in 1982, started producing here because I liked the crews. I loved the history.

"I have great respect for her, so when they asked I said yes immediately."

He also relived a conversation with Prince Philip, who died aged 99 years old last year.
