Too woke for today

Men Behaving Badly would never be made now as it would fail the woke test, says Caroline Quentin

CAROLINE Quentin says Men Behaving Badly could never be made for today’s woke TV.

The actress, who shot to fame as Dorothy on the Nineties sitcom, revealed that fans continue to clamour for a reboot.

The ITV sitcom made stars of Caroline Quentin, Leslie Ash, Neil Morrissey and Martin Clunes

But Caroline, 61, said: “It’s a wonderful artefact of a certain moment in time, but it wouldn’t pass the ‘woke’ test now.

“Every week, I get asked if there’s going to be a Men Behaving Badly comeback.

“All I can say is that I speak to Neil and Martin regularly and, as far as I know, there are no plans for a new series.”

The ITV sitcom made stars of Neil Morrissey, 59, and Martin Clunes, 60, plus Leslie Ash, 62, and Caroline as their long-suffering girlfriends.

Speaking in Saga magazine, Caroline reasoned: “I’m not that interested in comebacks; I prefer to look forward.

“I know there was a one-off charity show in 2014, but there is so much fantastic TV being made that we have no need to revisit something from more than 20 years ago.

“Don’t get me wrong, I will be eternally grateful to the show because it made me laugh every day for the six years I worked on it, plus, I met my husband Sam when he was working there as a runner.”

It echoes Neil’s own concerns around whether the laddish characters could weather the storm of today’s woke brigade.

Speaking earlier this year, the Line of Duty star said: “It’s not woke enough is it? Putting ladies’ underpants on my head… things like that.

“I guess Leslie was objectified a bit by my character. But that was the point of it – that we were really rubbish, and they were really cool and smart.

“We were a couple of misogynist idiots.

“I don’t know if it would work [now], but it would be fun trying.”
