The fish's owners were concerned by one of the fish's eyes, as there "seemed to be a tumour growing behind there".

Matt explained that "the mass has grown quite quickly and it is getting bigger, so unless we take it off now, it's just going to invade and destroy the surrounding tissue."

Viewers were instantly puzzled about how a vet would go about operating on a fish.

Matt told the camera: "We're gonna get him out, and get him under full general anaesthetic.

"While under anaesthetic, we'll remove the eye, and get him recovered in some fresh water."

The veterinarian added that fish are put under general anaesthetic in a completely different way to other animals and humans.

Instead of being injected it's achieved by "putting powder anaesthetic in the water, which it breathes over".

Matt admitted that putting a fish under general anaesthetic is something he'd never done before.

Fans of the Channel 5 show were blown away by the unusual operation.

One wrote: "Watching the Yorkshire vet operating on a fish" followed by a disgusted emoji.

Another was slightly more empathetic, writing: "Aww bless! Fish has just had surgery in his eye…one eyes fish! 👁"

As one viewer added: "Fascinating this week, I've never seen surgery on a fish before, so interesting to see how they go about it!"
