Gemma Owen’s dad Michael DIDN’T hang out with David Beckham ‘because of rivalry’ despite kids going to nursery together

GEMMA Owen's dad Michael DIDN'T have a friendship with football rival David Beckham - despite their kids going to nursery together.

Last night the Love Island star revealed she went to nursery with the Beckhams' sons while living in Madrid.

Gemma is exactly the same age as Romeo - the middle son of David and Victoria Beckham - with the other child she referred to likely to be Cruz, who is two years younger.

But despite the families both being abroad, the footballers' rivalry stopped the families from mixing.

Writing in his autobiography, Owen said: "As much as we ended up living close to David and Victoria Beckham and were two English families living abroad in the same city, there wasn't much in the way of social life as far as them and us were concerned.

"Given that both Louise and Victoria were quite lonely and both looking after young kids, they'd occasionally see each other while we were training. That was the extent of the friendship, however.

"This perhaps wasn't a surprise given that, by the time we found ourselves in Madrid together, David and I had even less in common than we ever had."

He even took a swipe at the Beckhams' fame, adding: "I certainly didn't like wearing the trendy gear or mingling among socialite company.

"David and Victoria on the other hand, were both bona fide superstars in their own right.

"They were operating on a completely different stratosphere from a social perspective.

"I never once got the impression I was on the inner circle of David's group of friends."

Owen and Beckham played for rival clubs Liverpool and Manchester United, but played together for England at the 1998 World Cup in France. They then both went out to play for Real Madrid for one season in 2004-05.

It was the tournament which saw the pair fall out during a match against Argentina when Becks was sent off.

Owen slammed Becks as "immature and petulant".

Gemma's kept quiet about her celebrity connections while in the villa, but gave a snappy response on Thursday night's show when pressed by Antigoni Buxton, who also has a famous parent in chef Tonia.

Not beating around the bush Antigoni asked: "Sorry, excuse me if I'm being ignorant. But is your dad very, very well known, he played for England right?"

Gemma, doing her make-up in a nearby mirror, replied simply: "Yeah."

Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu changed the subject, asking: "Do you like David Beckham's son?"

Gemma told her offhandedly: "Well, I went to nursery with his sons."

Looking shocked, they both replied: "Did you?"
