David Metcalfe (portrayed by Matthew Wolfenden) turned to desperate measures to get his hands on more cash as he was ready to file a fraudulent insurance claim following his collision with Nicola King.

With the extent of his money issues growing more concerning, David was also worried to see his business fail to get back on track, leading him to believe he was left with no other option than to get on the wrong side of the law.

The owner of David's Shop was exposed, with his scheming coming to light during Monday's trip to the Dales.

David's son Jacob and girlfriend Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) both found out he had faked his neck injury in a bid to receive money from Nicola's insurers.

But Victoria was adamant on helping him avoid prison and, to help him save his crumbling business, suggested she could sell her inherited farm land from her grandmother to cover his debts.

The couple spoke of their financial problems while sitting in a field, taking in the view of Beckindale from the top of Victoria's family farm.

Victoria and David laid in the grass while holding hands as the loving girlfriend assured she was ready to secure their future with a sacrifice as she wants nothing more than to build a family with David.

However, while the pair declared their mutual love, fans took to Twitter, unable to cope with the scene's "cringey" and "awkward" nature.

"The distressing scenes must've been that cringey scene in the field with David and Victoria", one viewer quipped.

Another wondered: "Why would you even lie in a field when it's full of bugs and spored and [poo emoji] probably?", as another penned: "Most awkward laying in a field I've ever seen."
