What are the rules of Generation Gap?

ABC’s Generation Gap is inspired by the Jimmy Kimmel Live! segment of the same name.

While Kelly Ripa serves as the program’s host, Kimmel is a producer on the hit game show.

The competition puts seniors and juniors together as they are tasked with answering pop culture trivia that may be considered before or after their time.

One pair of family members work together to gain victory over another family.

Kelly then quizzes them on topics from each other’s generations.

The topics range from movies, TV shows, and music from the present, as well as from decades before.

For instance, a grandparent might know the answer to a question about The Beatles and Star Wars.

On the other hand, the younger family member might know the answer to a question regarding BTS and The Avengers.

“Generation Gap is a family-friendly game show that really takes two generations from a family,” Kelly explained in a statement.

“Usually grandparents and grandchildren…and we ask them a series of questions about each other’s generations.”

Ripa also called the series more of a “comedy show than a game show” due to the comedic nature of the contestant’s responses.

“I have my parents who are much older and my kids who are much younger and it’s fascinating what their commonalities are, what they know about each other’s generation, and what they don’t know.

“What they know is always shocking and something to marvel but what they don’t know is unbearable funny.”

How did Kelly Ripa become the host?

Kelly revealed it was her years-long friend and fellow network host Jimmy Kimmel’s idea to ask her to host Generation Gap.

“Jimmy and I have been friends for many, many years,” the All My Children actress shared with .

“He’s seen me with my kids when they were young. Now, they’re adults but he’s seen me raise small children, and bring my parents or my in-laws everywhere, so he has seen me walk that line between the generations.

“He was like, ‘Wow! You’re good with young people and old people, you’d be perfect for this show.’ It was really just as simple as that.

“He and I really value working with your family – working with a close set of friends who are like family or your actual, literal family. So we’re very similar in that sense.

“Also, we have a similar sense of humor, a similar sensibility, and we’re not big on being a pain in the butt or working with pains in the butt.

“We like to keep it free-flowing and have an enjoyable environment. That’s what we both bring to the table.”
