Posting on social media, the journalist told fans he had spent the last few days in picturesque Cornwall.

However, the trip wasn't as relaxing as the 54-year-old was hoping for, as he posted a picture of himself caked in mud.

He explained to fans: ";Flat tyre. Rained every day.

"As you can see, I fell over in a muddy ditch (and then pretended it was a deliberate April Fool - nobody was fooled) but we had a lovely spring break."

Jon has been missing from BBC Breakfast on a number of occasions over the past few weeks.

In March he missed several editions of the show, with Ben Thompson stepping in for him.
