Before she, husband Tom Snr and their son Shaun had tuned in, Julie revealed why it was going to be a tough watch for her.

She said: "We know about this only too well because of my mum."

The Malone family and their fellow Gogglebox stars were shown an emotional clip of a chap called Mick, who had been diagnosed with dementia when he was 51.

Now four years on, he has deteriorated significantly and was struggling to sing his line as the choir recorded their charity single.

Recalling his late mother-in-law's battle with the disease, Tom Snr said to his wife Julie: "Sometimes your mum would try and figure her thoughts out and she couldn't, and so she had to go away out the room."

All the stars of Gogglebox were left in tears when Mick finally nailed his line, much to the relief of his emotional wife Karen.

Sisters Ellie and Izzi Warner were crying, with Izzi saying: "It just brings a tear to my eye. It's just so sad for them. It's so s***."

Friends Jenny Newby and Lee Riley were sobbing, and it all became too much for married couple Ronnie and Annie.

Ronnie had to leave the room and was then heard blowing his nose several times out of shot.

Julie, meanwhile, was comforted by the Malone family dog Dave after the mutt sensed her upset.

Watching from home, one viewer said: "The dementia choir featured on #Gogglebox just made me tear up. How people's health can deteriorate so fast and how heartbreaking it can be for loved ones to see. Just so sad."

Another added: "Watching #Gogglebox and the #Dementiachoir has broken me!"
