It came after Chris struck up a close friendship with the ex-wife of his long-time pal and fellow radio star Dave.
The DJ grew close to his ex Jayne Sharp, leaving the men refusing to speak to each other and Radio One staff stuck for how to help.
An insider told at the time: "They were so tight-knit but that changed almost overnight after Dave got wind of the friendship.
"Things deteriorated fast and it was never the same again.”

While Chris and Dave continued to work together, they had separate leaving parties when they concluded their decade-long stint.
The former friends chose two separate pubs for their parties, meaning pals had to travel from one event to another.
Elsewhere, Dave refused to join his former friend's theatre tour in the summer of 2012, which also included their breakfast show co-stars Dominic Byrne, Aled Hayden-Jones and Tina Daheley.
Dave split from his ex Jayne, 45, in 2011 after five years of marriage - with the couple sharing daughter Nicole.
The Radio 1 insider added: “It’s very bitter. Dave has got absolutely no time for Chris any more, and they hardly spoke except when absolutely necessary for the show.
"To say there’s no love lost would be an understatement. Dave feels totally betrayed. It’s a shame. They were best friends for years.”
It comes as Chris revealed the secret way he'll send signals from camp to his loved ones as he arrived in Australia.
The DJ will use bracelet accessories so if things get so bad, he can put secret messages to those watching at home.
Chris was seen wearing two beaded bracelets snipped around his right hand, both of which have slogans on them.
The first says his name, 'Chris', the other is surreptitiously labelled with the words 'Get Me Out'.
