Appearing on podcast , Jay told Jim Hamilton that the stars receive £375 for every week they remain on the show.

It was previously claimed the amount contestants receive is paid by  to compensate them for their time on the show.

The fee covers their bills, their rent as well as other general costs they usually have to cover back home.

Winners strive to win the £50,000 prize and contestants can hope to rake in more from building their profile after the show.

Jay - who was famously involved in a love triangle with Ekin-Su and her boyfriend Davide Sanclimenti - also claimed the producers told him to pick her over Paige Thorne when he entered as a bombshell.

He said: "It's not as organic as you think. For example, I was told not to pick Paige. I was with a girl called Ekin, who went on to win the show.

"I wasn't allowed to pick who I genuinely wanted to go for at the start, which was Paige."

When Jim questioned how the Islanders are supposed to find love if they can't pick who they like, Jay replied: "I was told by the producers it was too predictable if I went with Paige at the start. I trusted the process."

He added: "The experience was good and I'm so grateful for it, but I didn't expect it to be that produced."
