But now in a shock twist, to celebrate the legendary programme a number of extra special guest hosts look set to step into the role currently occupied by Colin Murray.

Amongst the new presenters are Baroness Floella Benjamin, Sir Trevor McDonald, Reverend Richard Coles and Moira Stuart who will all take it in turns to host a week of episodes each.

The stars will appear on the show alongside Rachel and Suzie as they celebrate the iconic milestone of the afternoon favourite.

As ever, a series of celebrity guests will join Suzie in Dictionary Corner during the special weeks.

As Baroness Benjamin steps up to the hosting plate, assisting Suzie will be TV personality Judge Rinder whilst former BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker will be accompanying during Rev. Richard’s week.

Reality TV star Bobby Seagull, who rose to fame on University Challenge before appearing in E4 celebrity show The Real Dirty Dancing, will sit alongside Sir Trevor before panto favourite Christopher Biggins joins Moira for her guest hosting week.

The head of daytime and features for Channel 4, Jo Street, excitedly said: We are absolutely thrilled to be welcoming these national treasures to the Countdown hotseat to mark this 40th anniversary milestone and are equally delighted to have enticed the remarkable Sir Trevor McDonald back to Salford.

"Countdown is a much loved institution, and we couldn’t imagine Channel 4 without it. Here’s to the next 40!”
