However, many were left horrified by the opening moments of episode six, which saw the former Russian Royal Family executed.

Nicholas II of Russia, his wife Alexandra Feodorovna, and their five children were taken into a basement and shot and bayoneted to death by Bolshevik revolutionaries.

The order had been given by the Ural Regional Soviet in Yekaterinburg on the night of 16–17 July 1918 amid the Russian Revolution.

The distressing scenes saw the family realise what was about to happen to them before viewers were shown them being shot in the head and stabbed to death.

The Crown viewers were left horrified by the graphic scenes, and took to Twitter to comment.

One wrote: "Having read all about the family before, 6th episode of #TheCrown S5 😭 actually devastating to SEE the Romanovs being murdered like that. Wth?!"

Another tweeted: "Absolutely horrific watching the demise of the Romanovs. #TheCrown."

A third wrote: "TheCrown episode 6 is traumatizing and so sad… The Romanovs…."

Meanwhile a fourth shared: "Forgive my ignorance, but I genuinely didn’t think the royals had anything to do with The Romanovs. I really didn’t need the extremely violent scene of their murders though #TheCrown."

The House of Romonov was the second dynasty to rule over Russia, following the House of Rurik.

Tsar Nicholas II was crowned in 1896 and reigned until his abdication in 1917.

In early 1917, the Bolsheviks - led by Vladimir Lenin - overthrew the government.

Eighteen members of the Romonov dynasty were killed by the Bolsheviks, and the remaining 47 went into exile abroad.

Prince Philip's DNA was used to identify the bodies of Russia's royal family in 1993, 75 years after they were murdered.
