The soap usually airs in the 7:30pm slot Monday-Thursday on BBC One but the semi-final fixture of the sporting tournament in Qatar took precedent over the iconic show.

Furious fans lashed out online as they were left angry and saddened that the programme had been taken off air.

One fan raged: "Very rude there's no EastEnders tonight tbh."

Another added: "So what has happened to tonight's episode of EastEnders?? Bl**dy football!"

A third seethed: "Where the F is tonight's bl**dy episode. I'm not interested in watching that cheating team who knocked us out of the world cup! Why isn't it on iPlayer."

As a fourth shared a string of distraught face emojis, alongside the caption: "No #EastEnders tonight."

The soap schedules have been in chaos as of late owing to the sporting competition with ITV counterparts Coronation Street and Emmerdale also facing upheavals.

Tonight's shake-up comes amid a series of shock returns in EastEnders.

The BBC soap stunned viewers when actor Adam Woodyatt secretly reprised his role as Ian Beale in Dot Cotton's funeral episode.

But they got another shock when another former Walford resident made a shocking comeback.

Keanu Taylor walked back into Walford almost three years after being driven out by Phil Mitchell.

The Sun can reveal that he’s back to stay with actor Danny Walters signing up for a full-time return, and he couldn’t be happier.

He told The Sun: “When I got the call and he told me about the storylines, [EastEnders boss Chris] was teasing some – he’s not told me them all yet – his vision is incredible.

“So when I heard what he wanted Keanu to do I couldn’t help but want to come back.

“And I feel very privileged to come back on such an iconic episode. The way I play him moving forwards it is a new type of character, it is exciting.”
