He wrote an ad in the local paper and was delighted to find that someone answered the ad.

They met up for coffee and - much to the amusement of fans - chatted about Lola being a "real handful" and "a little ball of mischief."

The woman even said she went back to the 'home' more than once to ask where she might be.

It wasn't until she pulled out a can of pilchards that it became clear she was talking about her missing cat Lola.

A dumbfounded Billy was gutted that he wasn't any closer to finding Lola's mum.

Viewers were in stiches over the blunder and praised the comical moment for contrasting with the harrowing storyline.

Taking to Twitter, one fan said: “Billy posted his add to find Lola's mum in the missing cats section. Hysterical."

Another wrote: “Absolutely wheezing at the Lola and cat mixup."

A third penned: “Lola the cat lol I'm dead. This episode has done such a good job of balancing comedy and drama this episode.”

Meanwhile, Sonia was suspicious of Billy after watching his exchange with the cat lady from afar.

Later in the Queen Vic, Phil offered to help Billy with his search.

Upcoming scenes see Phil give good news to Billy as he hands him the contact details for Lola's mother.

Billy's secret mission is well underway when he manages to find Emma at her work and tells her who he is.

Whether she agrees to follow him to her own daughter's wedding remains to be seen but will surely make for an exciting episode for viewers at home.

Will Jay and Lola finally tie the knot? How will Lola react to her long lost mother returning?

EastEnders airs from Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
