Nina interviewed Defence Secretary Ben Wallace

During the show, Nina interviewed Defence Secretary, MP Ben Wallace following criticism in the media over the British response to the war in Ukraine.

Nina spoke to the MP via video link as he was in Brussels, and said: "Lets talk about some International concerns about how robust UK defence is.

"We start with a comment from a French MP telling The Telegraph that our reserves have been significantly depleted by supporting Ukraine and that's a concern.

"Also supports in the German media backed up by the MOD sources in the UK saying NATO has asked Berlin to remain in charge of the leadership of the rapid reaction force because we're not capable of taking control.

"How are we supposed to react to these criticisms?"

Ben replied: "I think the first one, the story in Germany, is just b******s right?

"To be honest, the simple reality is NATO leadership did not approach anybody. We are taking over the VGTF as scheduled."

He then continued with his answer as Nina listened, but when he had finished speaking, she didn't initially apologise to BBC Breakfast viewers for Ben's bad language.

Some of those watching at home took to Twitter to complain, with one writing: "Pottymouth Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace on @BBCBreakfast! No apology?"

Another added: "Well, that’s the first time I’ve heard the word ‘b******s’ on the Beeb news service! And an MP and minister too!"

A third tweeted: "Looks like @BBCBreakfast isn’t going to apologise for Ben Wallace’s language. Well, that’s just b******s."

However, later in the show, Nina did apologise for the word used, telling viewers they had checked Ofcom rules and while it was an acceptable word "any complaints should be directed at the government".

Her comment left viewers in stitches, with one writing: "I laughed when Ben Wallace used the word "B******s" on #BBCbreakfast and I laughed even more now that they have just confirmed that they have checked the ofcom rules and it's acceptable language and Nina said 'any complaints should be directed at the government'".

Another added: "The presenters have just addressed the issue and although it’s a medium offensive word it was used in the right context. @NinaWarhurst advised viewers to complain to the government if the weren’t happy.

"I haven’t laughed so much in days, made my morning."
