THE One Show took an awkward turn after hosts Alex Jones and Alex Scott were left speechless when Idris Elba suffered some on-air gaffes during his interview.

On Wednesday evening, the British actor appeared on the BBC programme to discuss his return to his role in the highly anticipated film Luther: The Fallen Sun.

The hosts were excited about talking with Idris about the film, and they wanted to know how he felt about reprising the role, as well as what fans can expect from it.

The Welsh TV host, 45, then asked Idris if he could give fans a sneak peek of what they'll be seeing, then Alex Scott asked him what crimes Luther will be tackling in the film this time.

"There is a gentleman who is basically spying on all of us, using our phones, laptops, and CCTV," he quipped.

"Just wreaking havoc and basically John Luther is not having it as you know and he basically breaks out of prison... Oh no, I've told the plot now haven't I."

Alex then joined in with the humour and told viewers: "Spoiler alert from the man himself!"

However, things quickly became awkward due to some technical issues that resulted in long pauses of silence in the studio.

As the chat continued, it quickly became apparent that Idris' connection to the studio was down.

Each time Idris was asked a question, there was a short delay, which left an uncomfortable silence between them.

Alex Scott posed the question of why John Luther resembled him the most, but Idris was forced to remain mute due to the technical issue.

Clocking the fault, Alex quickly tried to wrap up the interview, as she asked Idris if he had lost connection and if he was still there.

After a long pause he finally responded: "Because he's patient, he has a lot of conviction and a bad temper."

The BBC hosts cut the interview short and wished Idris all the best with the new movie. There was another period of silence in the studio as laughter could be heard, and Alex Jones joked, "Isn't it nice how there's a huge delay on the other side of London?"

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
