Coronation Street snubbed at TV BAFTAs as EastEnders and Emmerdale trumped by dark horse

THE BAFTA TV Awards 2023 saw an unlikely win in the Soap & Continuing Drama category, while popular ITV soap Corrie was snubbed from the final nominations list.

Casualty stormed to victory and won against rival soaps and fellow nominees ITV's Emmerdale and BBC's EastEnders on Sunday night.

The BBC medical drama was declared the best Soap & Continuing Drama for 2023.

The cast and crew celebrated as they made their way to the stage to collect their trophy.

The cast included William Beck, Jon Sen, Loretta Preece, and Liza Mellody.

They thanked their team, crew and fans in a heartfelt moment.

Meanwhile, last year's winner, Coronation Street didn't even make the final nominations list, which historically appears in the category.

This year was different from previous years as only three shows qualified instead of four.

The hospital drama secured the prize two years after their last win.

Emmerdale hasn't won in the category since 2020, and EastEnders the year before that in 2019.

Other winners from the night included new BBC show The Traitors, which won the Reality And Constructed Factual award.

And host Claudia Winkleman won Entertainment Performance for fronting the show.

Another shocking result was The Masked Singer beating Ant And Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and Strictly Come Dancing to win best entertainment programme.

Sir Mo Farah won for his BBC One documentary The Real Mo Farah, which revealed he had been illegally trafficked to the UK as a child.

In his speech, Mo said: "The kids have no say at all, they are just kids and no child should ever go through what I did, I hope my story shows they aren't alone, we are in it together."

Anne-Marie Duff was awarded Supporting Actress for Bad Sisters.

Kate Winslet won best leading actress for her performance in I Am Ruth, about a mother who tries to help her depressed teenage daughter.

The viewer-voted BAFTA for the The P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award was given to the moment Paddington Bear enjoyed tea with The Queen during her Platinum Jubilee concert.

The BAFTA TV Awards 2023 is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
