Viewers watched as Cindy was seen lounging by a pool ignoring a call from George Knight.

It was revealed in the episode that George's missing wife Rose was not in fact missing - and instead had just disappeared having never really existed.

When George discovered the information, he played the track Kiss From A Rose by Seal in a nod to his ex-wife.

He then called 'Rose's' number - but it was Cindy's phone who rang.

Picking the phone up, Cindy ignored the call before taking a sip of her wine as she appeared to be living in paradise.

And the scene has left fans with a number of questions - how does she still have the same number and why hasn't George called her before?

One wrote: "How come characters can always ring people they haven't seen or spoken to for decades? Do people not change their phone numbers in the EastEnders universe? George somehow has Cindy's phone number? How?? [sic]."

Someone else said: "My only one gripe with that reveal is that I do not buy she would have the same mobile number as she did when she disappeared and even if she did, would not have blocked George's number or have him saved as a contact."

Viewers were left stunned as she finally made her return.

Writing online, one said: "Welcome back Cindy Beale. Class."

As another penned: "I am over the moon to see Cindy back. One of my first memorable characters of #EastEnders growing up!"

Before a third added: "Talk about shock endings."

Throughout the episode, Linda Carter and Phil Mitchell attempted to discover information on the missing 'Rose'.

It led to Phil using his trusty solicitor Ritchie Scott to attempt to find out some more information.

Ritchie revealed that she had managed to get in touch with a contact in Spain who might be able to offer them some more information on the missing mum.

Later, Phil confessed all to Linda and George that Ritchie had discovered Rose was alive and well overseas but did not wish to have any further contact with her family.

He left George heartbroken with the admission that his wife wanted nothing to do with him and his children.

The truth bombs continued as George later admitted to Linda that he ordered Rose out of his and the girls lives after an explosive argument.

She never turned back after the war of words despite George later attempting to get back in touch with her.

It left him feeling guilty that he was the reason that she had never looked back.

However, it was Phil that later had the biggest revelation of all.

He told George that Ritchie had actually discovered that there was no one with the name Rose Knight on any of the databases or the Spanish records.

Phil said to him: "I don't know who you think you were shacked up with for all them years but she weren't who she said she was.
