BBC Breakfast started on BBC One before moving to BBC Two at 7.30am to make way for the opening match between New Zealand and Norway.

It ended with New Zealand - who is co-hosting the tournament with Australia - beating Norway 1-0, with Hannah Wilkinson scoring three minutes into the second half.

The team later missed a penalty in the 90th minute.

Meanwhile on ITV, This Morning and Loose Women were cancelled so the channel could cover the game between Australia and the Republic of Ireland.

In the opening moments of tonight's EastEnders episode - which was available on iPlayer first thing - a scene between Eve and Martin saw them give a nod to the changes and the beginning of the football tournament.

As she worked on Stacey's van, Eve asked: "Did you see the football this morning? New Zealand-Norway...it was a cracking, cracking game."

Martin replied: "Nah nah, too early for me".

While that seemed like an odd reply for a man who runs a fruit and veg stall on a market and no doubt has to be up early to get his produce, EastEnders fans were quick to comment on the topical scene.

One wrote: "Good Women's World cup reference."

Another added: "Eve going to be up at the crack of dawn everyday to watch the football."

A third tweeted: "Isn't Martin a Fruit and Veg man?! That football game finished at 10... what time does he start?!"

EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
