Local actor Riley has been a vital character in the ITV smash hit drama since 2011 and has become a fan favourite, with many Vera viewers wishing he would become her new sidekick after Kenny Doughty made a shocking announcement that he was leaving his role as DS Aiden Healy after eight years.
In a recent interview, Kenny was asked about his departure from the show, and he said: “After 8 years & 35 Vera films I’ve made the difficult decision of handing over DS Healy’s badge. I can confirm I am leaving Vera.
“I want to thank everyone who’s made this amazing time so joyous, ITV, Silverprint, all the brilliant cast and crew.”
He also gave a big thank you to his partner in crime, Brenda Blethyn, who portrays Vera, calling her ‘the perfect leading star’ to whom he owes so much.
David Leon has been passed the baton and will make a shock return as Joe Ashworth, taking Kenny’s spot as Brenda’s new sidekick.
Jon Morrison, who plays DC Kenny Lockhart, will also be returning alongside Brenda, Riley and David.
