Liam Hemsworth signed on to replace the 40-year-old star as Geralt in the upcoming fourth season of The Witcher.

He took to Instagram to announce the news, saying: "As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia.”

Liam, 33, paid tribute to his predecessor, too, adding: "Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure."

The series has also been renewed for a fifth season. However, rumours have been circulating around the series, with claims that it will be the last instalment of the blockbuster franchise.

Redanian Intelligence reported: “There’s no official confirmation for this yet, but we’ve been hearing recently that yes, Season 5 is very likely the final season of The Witcher on Netflix.”

This makes sense, since The Witcher series is based on The Witcher Saga Books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The book series consists of five books and with only two left to pull from, its probable Season 4 will adapt The Tower of the Swallow, while Season 5 will adapt The Lady of the Lake and the show to a close.

Season 4 is set to air in 2024, with The Witcher casting director Sophie Holland confirming Deadline that they’d been gearing up to begin filming earlier in the year.

“We’re just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth and there will be a short gap then we go straight into season five,” she teased.

Although, these comments were made before the , so filming has not yet begun on the new season and may be pushed to next year.

Nevertheless, there is still a buzz around the new series. “I really look forward to seeing what Liam brings. He has a big fan base. Season four will be a nice mix of new characters and returning faces,” Sophie added.

This comes after The Witcher’s leading man Henry Cavill quit the show after three seasons.

The Superman star hasn’t explicitly revealed his reasons for leaving, though there were rumours of a behind-the-scenes rift between the actor and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich over creative differences.

He previously shared how much he loves The Witcher in a 2019 interview, saying: "I really enjoy playing these kinds of games and reading these kinds of books in my spare time.

"I don’t consider it a job. For me it is more like an extraordinary opportunity to live my childhood and adult life fantasies."

However, the star stressed that he was keen to be faithful to the source material and may have left because the show has continued to stray further and further from the books he loves.

The Enola Holmes star seems to have ended his tenure as Geralt on a good note though, and offered some kind words to his successor.
