CROWNING ROLE

I played Prince Harry on The Crown and three things annoyed me about filming Netflix series

The Crown’s Prince Harry is growing up as new actor Fflyn Edwards takes over the role.

THE CROWN’s star Fflyn Edwards plays young prince Harry in Season 6 and he’s excited about the part which is his biggest role to date, but admitted there are three things that really bugged him about the Netflix series.

Fflyn plays the young prince at the beginning of the upcoming season. He took over the role from Will Powell and will hand the reins over to Luther Ford as Harry becomes a teenager later in Season 6.

He stars alongside Rufus Kampa who plays the younger version of Prince William, as well as Imelda Staunton who will reprise her role as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce who plays Prince Philip, Dominic West's Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki who returns as Princess Diana.

The young Welsh actor has previously appeared in 1899 and Netflix’s Shadow and Bone, but The Crown is by far the biggest series he’s ever worked on.

He admitted to BBC News that he was not prepared for how big it would be, but did his best to get stuck in.

“It was a total adventure because every morning we woke up and we went somewhere new,” he said.

“We go into this warehouse and you’ll be in Buckingham Palace, and it was so weird because outside it would look like wood and then you walk in and you’ll be in the Queen’s bedroom.

“It was really cool to see all the other outfits of the characters, too.”

He added: “It was really a pleasure to work on the set, because a lot of people were amazing and were putting in the effort to make it the best series it can be.

“I was really nice to be a little part of it and to be able to add to it.”

The exciting adventure of the series did come with some challenges, though, the first of which came the minute he booked the role.

Fflyn recalled playing at the beach with his friends when he got the role.

“We were down in St Davids. I was down the beach playing with my friends. My mam came down, painted me in suntan lotion, and said I got the role - but [said] I wouldn’t be allowed it if I had a tan.

“So mam was painting me and painting me.”

Alongside having to avoid the sun, getting Harry’s accent right was a big struggle for the Welsh actor.

He ended up watching hours of YouTube video of the royal in interviews in order to perfect the accent and dampen his Welsh twang.

He ended feeling a bit homesick while surrounded by English accents, but said talking to other Welsh actors on set was helpful.

“Talking in English for a long time does make me miss the language, and speaking to someone [in Welsh] does feel like home.”

Fflyn also admitted the red wig he had to wear to turn him into Harry was a “nightmare.”

The actor, whose hair is naturally brown, said: “It was kind of annoying because it would take about an hour and a half every morning, and they would gel my hair back and put a sock on it and then put the wig on.

“When I wanted to itch my head, I couldn’t because I was worried about moving it out of place."

It was particularly difficult when they were filming on location in Spain. He recalled: “It was a bit of a nightmare because it was like wearing a beanie hat and it was absolutely boiling.”

But, despite these difficulties, Fflyn is happy with his performance in the role and said that it ended up being a good think that he didn’t know too much about Prince Harry’s life beforehand.

“I did my research and put the effort in and I was happy with how I did it. I trust myself that it was good enough,” he concluded.
