Masked Singer star Charlie Simpson reveals show’s biggest secrets – from host’s hidden guesses to ‘lockdown toilets’

Charlie won the show this year under the disguise of Rhino

MASKED Singer star Charlie Simpson has lifted the lid on the show’s backstage secrets.

The Busted singer has joined the judging panel after starring on the show.

Charlie Simpson won the show in February this year

Reminiscing on his own experience in costume, Charlie told The Sun and said it was one of the most ‘scary’ experiences.

“It was a really terrifying thing to do. I think that unless you’ve done the show, you can’t imagine how scary it really is.

“I think that it’s a bizarre circumstance to be in a big costume singing on national television and it is terrifying.

“I really feel for the contestants because I think when I first walked out, it’s probably the most scared I’ve ever been.”

Charlie was crowned the winner of the show in February this year under the disguise of Rhino.

He had a country music theme and was dressed up as a cowboy, performing Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, Into You by Ariana Grande and Use Somebody by Kings of Leon.

In Clue Song week, they sang The Lion King’s I Just Can’t Wait to Be King, which many believed confirmed Charlie’s identity as it was a reference to King Charles (aka Charlie).

Charlie said revealed the moment when Joel Dommett worked out it was him behind the mask.

“It was just really funny with Joel, I’d performed Chasing Cars and as I walked off he whispered, ‘I know who you are and I love you.’ And then I was like, ‘Oh s***, I think he’s got me.’

“Then he wrote on the piece of paper that it was me, which he revealed in the final episode,” he said.

“So funny, man. I just cracked up because I was like, “no one else got it the first time and he knew exactly that it was me”. So funny.”

He said how he even needed to conceal his identity whilst going to the toilet: “It’s nice to be able to arrive at the studios without a visor on and be able to go to the toilet and not put a visor on and all that stuff.

“That’s the funniest thing. But no, it’s really nice. I’ve just seen Davina and that was really sweet because I didn’t get to see her after I won, so I haven’t actually seen her since, so that was really nice. I’m looking forward to it.”

When asked if it was as secretive as the audience is led to believe, Charlie said: “Oh my God, people do not realise. It is the most secretive thing I’ve ever, ever come across. I mean it.

“I couldn’t go to the loo without putting all the visor and stuff on. It’s like MI5.  I guess the premise of the show is that it’s all about secrecy, but they take it very seriously which is good, I think!”

When asked how he would feel if any of the contestants were his friends, he said: “Well, imagine if one of Mcfly are in there! I might just say I want a Mcfly member in there to stir the pot! In terms of musicians, it’s a good chance I’ll have met them in the UK.

“It depends if they decide to hide their voice or not. So we’ll see!  It’s harder than you think guessing a voice.

“You can have two tones that sound similar. With me, lots of people thought I was James Arthur. It’s like two voices can sound a similar tone and it’s hard to place it.”
