Antiques Roadshow guest shocked as £5 painting he bought from charity shop sells for fortune

A GUEST on Antiques Roadshow was left overwhelmed as he discovered that a painting he had paid just £5 for had actually got a much bigger value.

Fiona Bruce was on hand to present the BBC One show which headed to Glasgow for its latest edition.

Set in Pollok Country Park, expert Frances Christie had the job of delivering some excellent news to one couple who had brought in a unique painting to be valued.

Frances was left impresses as she told the pair that the work of art had been created by Dorothy Steel, a local artist whom Frances insisted should be much more "well-known than she is".

This detail immediately caught the expert's attention as she asked the guest to spill a little more on the details of how they came to acquire the piece.

In response, the guest said: "I found it in a charity shop, in a place called Shawlands, not far from here, about 20 years ago."

The painting itself was a landscape piece of a number of houses which appeared to feature a slew of pylons in the background.

As Frances asked how much it had set him back, the guest laughed as he insisted he received it in exchange for a five pound note at a charity shop.

His partner then butted in to quip: "We probably paid more for the taxi to take it home [from the shop] because it was raining that day."

Clearly impressed with what was on offer, Frances went on to tell the pair that the painting was some of the best work she had seen on offer from Dorothy's back catalogue.

However, when it came to valuation, the pair were left in absolute shock at the price which was offered up.

Frances said: "If this were to come up to auction today I would put an estimate in the region of £3,000- £5,000."

Gasps could be heard among the crowd watching on as the guests could not hide the surprise on their faces.

The lady exclaimed: "Oh my goodness," as her partner looked on in shock as he appeared speechless before uttering: "Wow!"
