It came amid a whole host of shocking family revelations that saw Ed admit to being aware of the blaze raging without doing anything to stop it.

In the episode, the police took Ed away for questioning after the fire report showed that the blaze spread as a result of an "accelerant" believed to be white spirit.

His family were initially left horrified but it did not take long before Michael was left putting two and two together to affirm that his dad had deliberately put him in harm's way.

Michael was left believing that his dad purposefully set fire to the builders yard as part of an insurance ploy in order to recover the funds lost during his gambling addiction.

Believing this, Michael was left aghast at the thought of his dad's potential actions being the reason that he could have died.

Distraught, he broke down on the phone to Aggie Bailey and confessed all about the family's problems that they have been hiding for her while she is away looking after a sick family member.

Aggie hasn't been seen on-screen for months and therefore has been unaware of Ed's relapse into his gambling addiction.

Michael told her everything and later told his dad and sister Dee-Dee that Aggie knew the full truth.

Horrified, Ed was left panicking as it became clear that it had threatened to completely derail their marriage.

Later, he re-appeared having managed to speak to Aggie on the phone where he revealed that the pair had split forever.

Ed admitted: "She's washed her hands of me."

Referring to the split, he said: "I honestly never thought I'd see this day."

Ed was left in tears as Dee Dee attempted to comfort him, unaware that the worst was yet to come.

He added: "I can still picture the first day we met, [it's] coming up to 34 years."

With the marriage seemingly over for good, Ed admitted that whilst he was not directly responsible for the fire, he purposefully chose to ignore it raging as he wanted to get rid of the builder's yard.

Dee Dee was furious at his confession having publicly backed him and stood by him when he revealed his marriage to her mum was over.

She later said she would keep his horror secret in order to not cause Aggie and Michael any more upset.
