Adam Sandler takes on a serious role in the upcoming movie

When Adam’s name is brought up, people usually assume that it's another hilarious comedy that he has featured in - but not this time around.

In the newly-released film Spaceman, the New York comedian takes on a completely different and more serious role as he heads off to space.

The film, which is due to arrive on Netflix in a few days, sees Adam play the role of astronaut Jakub Prochazka, who is sent to the solar system's edge to collect mysterious ancient dust.

During his voyage, Jakub finds his life back on Earth falling apart and turns to the one voice who can help him try and salvage it all.

The official synopsis for the film reads: “Jakub Procházka was raised by his grandparents in the Czech countryside after being abandoned as a young boy.

“He works as a scientist before trying to become the Czech Republic's first astronaut.”

Adams's most recent serious role seems to be going down a storm with audiences and critics.

Previously, the film had a 100% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes but has now gone down to 92% - which is still very impressive.

Spaceman debuted at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 21, before being released in cinemas on February 22 for a limited time only.

And from March 1, the 107-minute sci-fi drama will be available on Netflix.

The 57-year-old dad-of-two will be starring alongside Carey Mulligan, Paul Dano, and Kunal Nayyar in Spaceman.

Taking to Rotten Tomatoes, one reviewer commented: “ Smart, entrancing, and filed firmly under interesting.

“Spaceman is a conversation-starting meditation on the human condition made as a piece of art for audiences to experience rather than being a film made with an audience in mind.”

Another added: "Had the opportunity to watch this at the Berlin premiere.

"Absolutely loved the musical score, the Sandler performance and the production.

"I disagree with some of the negative critical remarks about it being slow, I loved the gradual build."

A third penned: "I thought it was a terrific movie. Adam Sandler continues to impress as a dramatic actor. Carey Mulligan is always good. Isabella Rossellini was perfectly cast as the mission director.

"The story has a lot of interesting elements, isolation, selfishness, love and redemption. Very well told and executed."

However other viewers weren’t too impressed and criticised the film, with one saying: “Spaceman feels a little too weighty in its reliance on emotional cliches.

“Whether that’s ultimately due to the underlying material or the heavy hand brought to translating it, the net effect is a failure to launch.”

A second wrote: “Beyond the physical demands of the role, Spaceman brings no new shade to some of the glummer Sandler personas we’re already familiar with. Renck’s film leaves him quite literally lost in space with nowhere to go.”

A third said: “ Dreary, sluggish sci-fi which will have most viewers banging on the doors for an escape pod.”

Elsewhere a new romantic Netflix movie has been labelled as ‘perfect’ with fans claiming that it's even better than Normal People and as good as One Day.
