The Northern Irish star had been off air for the past year following the merging of the BBC's news channels in a cost-cutting measure.

Other seasoned broadcasters such as Geeta Guru-Murthy, Karin Giannone, Kasia Madera lost out on presenting gigs as a result of the overhaul.

However, following previous reports bosses at the corporation were offering all women permanent on air roles to avoid potential legal battles, Martine Croxall has now confirmed her return.

The 55-year-old revealed the news as she celebrated her colleague Annita's triumphed return.

She told fans her on air return is "not long now" before adding how "it’ll be great to be back on air in what promises to be a busy year".

However, Martine stopped short on revealing an exact date, telling them: "Date tbc but not long!"

Previously speaking about the behind-the-scenes battle with the laid off presenters, an insider told The Times: “They’re all litigious and the National Union of Journalists will back them.

"Plus, the BBC is short of presenters so there are no grounds to make them redundant. And they’re all capable of doing the role.

"A reverse ferret is definitely the best plan.”

A spokesperson for BBC News previously declined to comment on 'HR issues' when contacted by The Sun.

Who are the current presenters of BBC Breakfast?
