Fans were left in bits last night as Gogglebox paid tribute to the late George Gilbey.

At the end of Friday's episode, a message read "In loving memory. George Gilbey. 1984-2024."

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one fan wrote, "Rest In Peace George. Love to Linda and family."

Another added, "RIP George, thinking of your Mum who's lost both her husband and her son now!!"

George was a 'lovely boy' and the 'life of the party'

George Gilbey was a "lovely boy" whose life had "spiralled a bit out of control", a friend has said.

His friend said: “George was a lovely boy — but was like a leaf in the wind. He had spiralled a bit out of control.”

While a barmaid at one of his regular haunts added: “George liked a drink and was the life and soul of the party. Everyone knew George. We’re all completely heartbroken.”

More on George Gilbey’s step-father

Pete McGarry died at his home in Essex alongside his family in June 2021.

His wife Linda said at the time: “Pete was a lovely man and I was so lucky to have him for 25 years.

“I said to him, ‘We’ve not only been 25 years, it’s been day and night with each other.’ He was my life.

“I have a message from a young lad I know who said, ‘Ordinary people won’t be remembered, but we’ll remember Pete forever – like the pyramids.’ I thought that was beautiful.”

And she added: “He was so proud of George when he was in Big Brother too."
