The decision went down very badly after Jerome covered his cherries in malt vinegar – leaving the judges disgusted.

But in a shock decision he landed place in the quarter finals and those watching at home weren’t happy.

One person said: “Rana was robbed.”

A second remarked: “So, you cook a dish that everyone says doesn't work, and then you put vinegar in your dessert and still go through?  Shocking decision to put Jerome through.”

“My other half has just yelled FO at #MasterChef - yes Jerome we are all shocked. Rana was robbed,” commented a third.

And a fourth raged: “So a dessert that makes everyone gag get you through to the quarter final???”

After her shock exit, Rana said: “I went and did my best and enjoyed it and that’s all that matters. I feel gutted but I get to go home and see my little ones.”

Jerome and the other three remaining contestants were tasked with cooking for former finalists Jane Devonshire, Ping Coombes and Irini Tzortzoglou.

In a bizarre moved Jerome decided to top his dessert with pickled cherries, which left everyone horrified.

Jane commented:  "That pickle - tastes like malt vinegar!"

While Gregg said: "I'll tell you what I don't want ever, ever again, is cherries and malt vinegar.”

And John agreed, adding: "I like sour cherries, but that's ridiculous."

Despite that - and previously saying Jerome hadn't listened while cooking the trout - he sailed through to the next round.

MasterChef is currently on it’s 20th series and the judges have hinted that the anniversary will see the hardest culinary trials yet, including cooking in Michel Roux Jr’s London restaurant.

Gregg said: "We are putting the cooks through the most extraordinary challenges we've ever seen."

John added: "Michel allowed our contestants to do a service at Le Gavroche before that historic restaurant closed. It's an incredible thing to say."

And the judging duo have no plans to stop after reaching the anniversary milestone.

John said: "It's a great year, but there's going to be many, many more great years to come."
