John Torode and Gregg Wallace were both on hand with their watchful eyes as they observed the contestants and dissected the kitchen action.

But in order to progress in the competition, the contestants also had to impress three former MasterChef expert tasters.

2015 winner Simon Wood, champion Shelina Permalloo from 2012, and 2015 finalist Tony Rodd all gave their verdicts on each contestants dish.

It was Haddy, 28, who was making her signature Akara dish - which is deep fried black bean puree - for the starter course.

The crispy fritters were also accompanied by an onion and chilli and tomato sauce.

Looking at the menu, Shelina couldn't help but remark: "This screams party food."

But Haddy appeared frantic as she tried to finish up in the kitchen before her time limit ran out.

Torode reminded the contestant: "Haddy! You got five minutes on your first course."

In the end, the trio of former stars did enjoy the dish, as did both John and Greg.

For mer main, she made crispy chicken thighs with a peanut butter stew, accompanied with glazed carrots and sticky white rice.

She impressed so much with her food, she was the first of three contestants to make it through to the quarter finals.
