Hit ITV comedy’s return teased by star – six years after fans were left devastated by its axe
The popular programme enjoyed a run of more than a decade
A STAR of a beloved ITV comedy has teased its return – six years after its loyal fans were broken hearted by its axe.
Actress and novelist Sherrie Hewson, 73, chatted to Susanna Reid and Ed Balls on today’s episode of Good Morning Britain.
TV viewers know Sherrie for her soap roles in Coronation Street (1993–1997, 2006), Crossroads (2001-2003) and Emmerdale (2004-2006), and as a panellist on Loose Women for more than a decade.
However, she also had a starring role as Joyce Temple-Savage in sitcom Benidorm from 2012 to 2018.
The programme featured an ensemble cast playing holiday-goers and staff at an all-inclusive hotel in Benidorm, Spain over the course of a week each year.
The line-up also included the likes of Siobhan Finneran, Johnny Vegas and Steve Pemberton, to name a few.
During her appearance on Good Morning Britain, Sherrie addressed the possibility of Benidorm making a comeback to screens, after fans were left upset by the fact it ended.
Agreeing with presenter Susanna Reid that the show is “huge” on Netflix, Sherrie said: “Well, everybody in the world watches it now.
“Everybody stops me in the street and says, “We just want it back.”
“It would make a film, I think and you could bring people from everywhere, that had ever been on Benidorm, their stories back together.
“I think it would be brilliant and it would be two and a half hours as opposed to half an hour.
“I think it would be very funny, so that’s what I’m up there for.”
Sherrie revealed her belief that the show’s writer Derren Litten “loves the idea” of a continuation but added it’s not for her to say.
She shared: “He’s a brilliant writer and I know he would write the most wonderful film.”
In the meantime, the star is set to add to her soap repertoire with a meaty new role.
Last month, it was announced Sherrie had signed up to the Channel 4 show Hollyoaks, in the role of Martha Blake, mother of the late Patrick (Jeremy Sheffield).
Speaking at the time, she said: “It’s been a roller coaster joining Hollyoaks! The character is just wonderful to play.
“Everyone is so lovely, such a great atmosphere to work in and so welcoming. We laugh a lot. What more could you ask for?”
Meanwhile, a twist will see actor Jeremy join Sherrie later on, but in the new role of Jez, the twin brother to Patrick.
Previous episodes of Benidorm are available on ITVX and Netflix.
