Ken Bruce takes swipe at BBC as he lifts three industry awards and says he’s ‘reinvented himself’
Ken's haul of trophies showed Radio 2 what they are missing
KEN BRUCE left Radio 2 just over a year ago – and he showed them what they are missing at yesterday’s Tric Awards.
He picked up trophies for daytime, best radio show for his new slot on Greatest Hits Radio and radio personality.
He told me: “It’s a real privilege actually to have moved on and for people to make the noise and say, you know, you’ve done all right.”
On stage he added: “I started 47 years ago this month, it’s amazing I’m still standing up here. It’s been an absolute joy over the age of 60 to reinvent myself as something new.”
Collecting his extra awards later, he joked: “Now I’m looking forward to doing something else, maybe standing as President of the United States.
“It’s lovely to see Scotland winning a trophy!”
Corrie’s double
CORRIE scooped two awards – including Best Soap.
Tina O’Brien and the rest of the cast beat EastEnders, Emmerdale and The Archers.
Maureen Lipman who plays Evelyn Plummer, took the Best Actor gong and dedicated it to Roy Cropper actor David Nelson.
She said: “I think you’ve given it to the wrong guy, I’m very happy.”
Mr Bates first past the post
IT won public support for hundreds of subpostmasters wrongly prosecuted in the Horizon IT scandal.
Now Mr Bates Vs The Post Office has proved itself a winner again – by scooping a top TV award. After landing a Broadcasting Press Guild honour in March, the ITV drama – the UK’s most watched show of the year following its January debut – yesterday took home a Tric award.
It beat Happy Valley, Death in Paradise and Kin in the drama category.
The drama also won the Special Award at the end of the ceremony. The team behind the series hailed the victims’ courage, adding: “Fight for what is right and decent, whatever the industry.”
The tale behind the drama, Mr Bates Vs The Post Office: The Real Story, won best factual series, ahead of Planet Earth and The Repair Shop.
Elsewhere, Gordon, Gino and Fred: Viva Espana! triumphed in the food show category.
Strictly rolls on
STRICTLY professional Michelle Tsiakkas says losing under-fire dance pro Giovanni Pernice won’t change the show.
Celebrating with head judge Shirley Ballas, pictured with the Entertainment award, Michelle said: “We’re sad about losing Giovanni – we are a big family at the end of the day, but Strictly has been so successful over the last 20 years – so we must be doing something right.
“It’s the best distraction for people when they have troubles in their life and they put on the TV.”
Michael's next role
MICHAEL FASSBENDER is to star in a new espionage thriller, by George Clooney‘s company Smokehouse Pictures.
The Agency is a take on the French show Le Bureau about Martian, a CIA agent ordered to abandon his undercover life. The series will air on Paramount+.
