TOWIE could be set for the most explosive series finale ever after bosses were forced to ‘take emergency measures’.

Drama on the long-running ITVBe show reached a fever pitch after Junaid Ahmed recently revealed his secret relationship.

Junaid, 29, recently doubled down on his decision to pursue a romance with his best mate Harry Derbidge's ex-boyfriend.

He insisted that his former partner Joe Blackman "one hundred percent" felt the same way.

Now, a show source has said that the situation between the warring trio has deteriorated even further.

Apparently, things got so bad on the show that bosses were forced to take unprecedented steps as they shot the final scenes.

An insider told The Sun Online: "Let's just say things really kick off after the Harry, Joe and Junaid love triangle.

"I don't think anyone was expecting it to end the way it ends.

"It was pretty shocking and the fallout was so bad that the show had to do something that has never ever happened before."

We have approached a representative for The Only Way Is Essex for comment.

Last month, Harry - who is the cousin of Amy Childs - was dumped by his fiancée in emotional scenes.

The pair had been dating for a year, but Joe called time on their romance just after their anniversary.

Junaid has since been cut off from his castmates after revealing his secret relationship.

In a move of solidarity, Amy, 34, also unfollowed him on Instagram along with several of their co-stars.

However, Junaid broke his silence on the situation to us at the Kids Like Us red carpet in London's Leicester Square.

The reality TV personality admitted: "I'm at the centre of the biggest love triangle Towie has probably ever had in years.

Is TOWIE now going back to its roots?

There is nothing like a good triangle to potentially reinvigorate what could be described as a stale reality TV series.

Every summer (and for a few winters) ITV viewers tuned into Love Island in droves. But let's think of the wider landscape for a second, Celebs Go Dating, Married At First Sight, Love Is Blind and Too Hot To Handle. It seems viewers want to see relationships. More than that, they want to see the drama behind relationships.

Towie in comparison looked stale. Friends getting into arguments in an effort to get some extra screen time. Viewing has been in decline for a long time as bosses have searched for any storyline to grab viewers attention.

Yes, we have had relationships that have ended and then friends just couldn't help but make a move after (looking at you Ella Rae Wise and Dan Edgar). However the series has lacked a triangle to properly invest in.

Now we have one in the form of Junaid, Joe and of course one of the original cast members, Harry Derbidge. He has appeared on and off since the series inception back in 2010.

We of course remember the doomed romance with Bobby Norris as the pair were mocked by the late, great Joan Rivers on E!'s Fashion Police. Now Amy Childs, another OG cast member is getting involved by unfollowing Junaid in a move on solidarity.

Like many fans, I love a bit of nostalgia and I can say that I am properly invested in this new drama. It's the next generation of cast members that are involved with the beloved OG's and I am lapping it up.

The real question is, can bosses capitalise on this and maintain the quality drama?

"But do you know what, I went with my heart and I had to be honest and open.

"Harry was my friend, Harry was with Joe, and I was honest and open about my feelings for Joe.

"It was one of those things I had to go with my heart, we were in Cyprus."

We then asked Junaid if he had feelings for Joe prior to Cyprus, the star replied: "No, it was definitely in Cyprus.

"But it was quite difficult because Harry and Joe were on the rocks. I was with Joe every day, I was supporting him, spending a lot of time with him.

"And as we were spending more time together, I actually started developing feelings for him.
