Hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley teased his name throughout the morning, holding up clues including a pair of ski goggles and gold medals for veiwers.

Asked why he'd signed up to the tough show by Ben, Steve, 62, said: "I don't know.

"But earlier this year on the series it was Torvill and Dean's 40th anniversary of winning their gold medal, and it's my 40th anniversary as well ... and we're friends.

"Some of my friends are saying it's a midlife crisis, but I'm too old for a midlife crisis!"

He revealed their training starts next week and he needs a bespoke pair of boots made for him.

Cat asked: "Don't take this the wrong way but have you got ice skates to fit you?"

Steve replied: "I've got very big feet, size 12 but very wide. So I'm having some shoes made for me."

Steve said he has "no idea" who he's going to be paired with but admitted as the "oldest and heaviest" on the show, at 120 kilos, he has asked for "somebody big".

The Olympics legend, who joined talkSport this year, has a reputation as one of the greatest rowers of all time.

He has made various appearances on television, both in sports-related programmes and reality TV shows like skiing reality show The Jump in 2015 and Celebrity MasterChef in 2019.

The mum-of-two spoke out on her new telly gig, telling GMB hosts Susanna Reid, 53, and Ed Balls, 57: "I am so excited. I am competitive!"

It comes after she won I’m a Celebrity . . . in 2012.

A telly source said: “Charlie’s a brilliant signing.

"She has a huge fanbase from EastEnders and has tons of personality and feisty energy.

“The ITV bookers hope she can recreate some of her on-screen I’m a Celeb magic.
