AN award-winning reality show has been axed after a whopping 23 series on air.

One of the show's leading stars has admitted the programme has "run its course" after 12 years and countless spin-offs.

The programme follows various different people living in remote parts of Alaska as they survive off the beaten track.

In the show, fans keep up to date with the cast's personal lives as well as seeing the struggles of life in tough terrain and an unforgiving environment.

Among the cast are married could Chip and Agnes Hailstone who live with their seven children on the Kobuk River.

Agnes is one of the longest-serving residents of Alaska, having spent her entire life there and family ties to land that dates back thousands of years.

However, after 12 years, the duo confirmed that they show, which airs on Disney+ and National Geographic, would not be returning after its 23rd season.

Confirming its fate online, Chip said: "Well, folks, it's official; Life Below Zero has run its course.

"No contract, No Life Below Zero.

"It was a fun 12 years and the show won 9 Emmy Awards, and we were on the first to the last episodes. Now onto a sharp and profitable future."

The news that the show had been brought to an end left many viewers devastated as they expressed their sorrow online.

One fan wrote underneath Chip's post: "We will miss seeing you and everyone else on the program. You have been a fixture in our lives."

Another added: "I’m so disappointed by this news. I can’t wait for the final season to air."

Before a third penned: "We will miss your family. I never missed a show … Thank you for letting us into your lives."

However, Chip appeared to be open to the show being revived in the future but hinted it was unlikely as he added in a further post on X: "Never know, they occasionally revive shows from the grave, so theres a small chance we will get resurrected...."

Both of the show's spin-off series have also been given the boot with select cast members from those editions being moved to the main programme for its 23rd and final season.

Produced by BBC Studios, production has already fully wrapped on the once-popular spin-offs, Life Below Zero: Next Generation and Life Below Zero: First Alaskans.
