BUYING a house by mistake on Homes Under The Hammer was a disaster for one viewer, who was ripped off by cowboy builders while caring for a sick relative.

Martin Roberts presented BBC One's Homes Under The Hammer, but suffered a health scare last year so he shares the duties with co-presenters Martel Maxwell and Dion Dublin.

Every episode features houses that are up for auction and shows the journey of the new owner. However, for one unlucky house owner, it was not a happy ending.

She revealed on the show that she bought her property without even seeing it, then hired some builders and paid them before she was called away to the USA to care for a sick family member.

Fans later discussed the moment online, with one person commenting: "She returned to find the builders hadn't done the work and had p****d off with the money. I think she was still looking for a replacement builder at the end of the show (postie distracted me so I missed the end!)"

Another added: "What was even scarier was when the presenter asked her what her budget was for renovation.

"She said something like 'I've just given up my job so I can't borrow any money, so my last salary cheque I guess' - whilst standing in a house that was basically falling down.

"I didn't see what happened next, but I assume she didn't sleep at night for a long time!"

Another added: "I thought Homes Under the Hammer was a nice programme like the one with Nick Knowles.

"I need to watch this episode because it seems like she hired a bunch of cowboys with her last bit of money only for them to rob her."

The hugely popular Homes Under The Hammer is in its 27th series.

Martin Roberts, 61, confirmed to The Sun Online earlier this week that the show is part of his life and he is still filming twice a week.

He says that he will continue to fit it around his new ITV DIY docuseries as he renovates a pub - following in the footsteps of Sun columnist Jeremy Clarkson.

He told The Sun Online: "As long as people are watching it, as long as people are still enjoying it, as long as people come up to me, as they do it all the time and say, you know, you really helped me through some tough times, thank you for doing Homes Under The Hammer, I'll carry on doing it."

Like Jeremy Clarkson, he is doing up a pub called The Hendrewen Hotel in Blaencwm, South Wales which will be the subject of the new programme.

Like the former Top Gear presenter, Martin has had trouble with his heart.

The TV personality underwent emergency heart surgery after doctors told him he had hours to live.
