LET LOOSE AGAIN

90s boyband star to take on the charts with new single – 31 years after huge hit song

Let Loose's drummer Lee Murray has a new single out in January called Never Give Up on Us.

A NINETIES boyband star is set to take on the charts with a brand new single - three decades after his original band had a huge hit song.

Lee Murray, the drummer from Let Loose, whose band's hit song Crazy For You reached number 2 in the charts, is releasing his single, Never Give Up on Us, on January 24.

But Lee, 54, also teased an imminent Let Loose song which could top the charts again, saying: "Glorious is our latest single as a band, and that will be out as soon as we can get it all together. We'll probably shoot a video.

"What we will try and do is not look like middle-aged men in the video, which is quite tough because we don't look like we used to put it that way."

He explained that the new single is uplifting and positive about overcoming tough times.

"Glorious is about the notion that you want to try and keep a positive spin on everything. At the moment, the world is an uncomfortable place to be. Glorious, is an uplifting pop song for people to listen to and forget everything for three and a half minutes."

Crazy for You was Vertigo Records' debut single in 1993, reaching 44 in the charts.

Then Mercury Records re-released it in June 1994 and went to number 2.

Lee told The Sun Online: “I still remember being in the back of a car when Crazy for You made the charts.

"We had a midweek chart and in 1994, we reached number two. I remember us all running up and down the street in Edinburgh, going crazy because we had the chance of being on Top of the Pops. It was just an incredible moment."

He explained: "We released it in '93 which didn't happen for us. So we remixed it again in 94 and that was the one that charted.

"The summer of '94 was so memorable for so many people because Four Weddings and A Funeral was enormous.

"Wet, Wet, Wet scuppered us from nudging my number one, but we were number two for about five weeks. We shared the same record company we used to joke with Marti Pellow."

During his heyday the band appeared on TOTP with Oasis, Blur, Take That, East 17. The highs of charting planes and living a life of luxury were replaced with lows once he decided to leave the band.

The band reformed last year with former Bad Boy Inc. singer Matthew James Pateman as the lead singer.

Under the new set up, Lee feels genuine happiness when he looks out into the crowd because the pressure is off.

DOSE OF NOSTALGIA

Part of this is due to working with Matt, who became the lead singer after Ritchie retired.

Lee said: "People have taken to us and we've released a couple of songs that have gone on the radio.

"We have a fantastic dynamic and are enjoying ourselves with gigs with Eternal, Five and 911, so we are seeing all our old mates again from the nineties at the retro shows."

Matt has also taken over from Mike Nolan in The Fizz, so in addition to the nineties, he is doing the 80s shows with them and all the 90s shows with Let Loose.

Lee added: "We've just been working very hard to gig as much as possible, to try and reignite even, even a percentage of what we used to have in the 90s, where we used to play these big places like Shepherds Bush and Empire and Hammersmith, Brentford and so on, these fairly sizable theaters. It would be lovely to play those again."

In addition to the new single, Let Loose has a range of nineties festivals, from Butlins to 90s V 00s Big weekenders. He said, "Some people criticise, saying, you know, they're only good for Butlins, but along with Brit Fest in the middle of the year with lots and lots of other 90s bands, these are fantastic shows to do."

"It's one of those moments that we never, ever thought we'd find ourselves, you know, in this position where we back playing these huge festivals, it's fantastic."

He noted: "The industry has completely changed, and it's all because of the internet. You can get directly to the fans and circumnavigate record companies.

"The downside of that is, of course, there's a lot of content out there, because anyone can release a record now, you put it out through socials, really on a particular platform. The last couple of singles went out through Universal.

"Obviously, it's the competition which is very difficult. You don't earn any money out of singles - you basically give them away.
