It’s been a busy Christmas and New Year in Walford with Cindy’s affair being publicly revealed and Nish trying to kill off half the square.

But fans are growing frustrated with the fall out from the festive frenzy, taking to socials to discuss what’s next.

One used the headline 'Laziest Writing' to start a thread on Reddit, saying: “This is just ridiculous at the moment, NYE was great, but the two weeks that’s followed is horrendous.

“All of this stuff with Lauren is just terrible writing, getting really hard to watch.”

Another said they were going to pause watching the show all together until things Improved.

They said: “I'm honestly letting the episodes stack up and when I know that things have sorted themselves out I'll either resume or catch-up on what's happened.

"But Nugget, Martin and Stacey and Ruby, Reiss and Sonia and Bianca and the Lockup, Teddy and Sharon, Who Shovelled Cindy and the Red Herrings, Ravi and Denise and Jack...I can't say as a single one of those stories is rocking my world.”

It seems like one storyline in particular isn’t exciting viewers.

After her affair with Junior was exposed, we saw Cindy Beale trudging through the snow with her suitcase, attempting to get to King’s Cross.

Just as she’s shivering, settling in to wait for a very delayed taxi under the Square’s Christmas tree, an unseen attacker smacks her over the head with a shovel.

The twist to an already long storyline doesn’t seem to have peaked the interest of fans.

One viewer complained: “I wouldn’t personally call it “terrible writing” but it does feel a bit like a desperate/forced attempt just to have a ‘whodunnit’ for the anniversary.”

They continued: “It’s not necessarily a bad story but to build it up and drag it out into the 40th anniversary just feels unearned: it isn’t different or exciting, and the characters involved aren’t that great either.”

Things aren’t much rosier over on Coronation Street, as The Sun recently reported behind the scenes troubles are threatening to disrupt things on the cobbles.

Now long time star Shelley King, 65, who’s played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the street since 2014,  has added her name to a growing list of actors who are leaving Weatherfield.

Actors Charlotte Jordan, Sue Cleaver, Sue Devaney, Colson Smith and Luca Toolan have all recently confirmed their exits from the show.
