Peter was hailed by fans who knew him on many stations from Magic, Hallam FM, Plymouth Sound, Durham FM, Radio Aire, TFM and BBC Radio Newcastle and Tees.

The broadcaster also appeared on screen, hosting shows for Made In Tyne and Wear as well as travel and weather updates on BBC Look North breakfast.

He held countless charity and business award ceremonies over the years.

Tributes have flooded in from former colleagues and fans.

Former BBC Radio Newcastle broadcaster Alfie Joey described Peter as "relentlessly positive".

"Even when he was given his cancer diagnosis last year he said he wasn't going to dwell on the negatives," he shared on Facebook.

"Thoughts and love to his wife Sarah-Jane & family. And fond memories of some happy times together, on and off air. RIP Peter."

Meanwhile ex-Look North news reader Colin Briggs praised Peter as a "proper pro at everything he did".

BBC Radio Newcastle and BBC Radio Tees broadcaster Simon Logan added the former broadcaster was a "radio legend".

He knew Peter as a "great friend" and wrote: "R.I.P Peter, you fought a brave battle and will always be remembered especially for being kind, generous and so positive all the time."

Graeme Pickering, a fellow former broadcaster, recalled how he worked with Peter on the Magic 1170 breakfast show.

"Just as friendly and upbeat with folks off-air as he was on-air," he penned.

And BBC Radio Tees producer Anthony Day shared a sweet story of how the pair met.

"I did my first ever radio car live with Peter on Boxing Day 2013 at the Seaburn dip @bbcnewcastle," he said.

"I was very nervous but he put me at ease with his humour, fun and kindness. RIP."

Fan and listener, Debbie Paige Macpherson, also paid a touching tribute: "He was absolutely brilliant on BBC Newcastle. I loved his shows very much I am so very sad to read this tonight.

"Thinking of you and all his family and friends. Sending lots of love."

Another former colleague who worked with Peter when he was presenting early breakfast, described him as "a true professional".

"RIP Peter it was good to work with you not just as a colleague but as a friend," she shared.
